Anaerobic Culture

Sunquest Code:ANER
Epic Code:LAB233Epic Name:Anaerobic Bacterial Culture
Methodology:Incubate in anaerobic atmosphere.
Test Includes:Culture and identification of fastidious anaerobes. If Actinomyces species or P. acnes is suspected, indicate on request form - culture will be held longer. For CSF Culture, Anaerobic, refer to ANCSF (LAB3282).
Turnaround Time:Performed daily; results are reported within 7-14 days.
Special Instructions:
Areas of the body containing anaerobes as part of the normal flora (stool, cervix, urethra, vagina, mouth, throat, sputum, skin, etc.) should not be cultured. Collect in a manner to avoid contamination with normal flora.
  • Bartholin gland - collect by aspiration
  • Endometrium - collect by aspiration or in the operating room
  • Urine - collect by supra-pubic aspiration; clean catch or catheterized specimens are not acceptable.
  • Vaginal abscess - collect by aspiration

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Normally sterile body fluid or tissue, abscess or wound aspirate in Anaerobic Transport tube.
Optimal Volume:3 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL body fluid; abscess or aspirate. Tissue must be visible.
Container:Anaerobic tube (Eswab Copan)
Collection Instructions:Tissue, body fluid, abscess or wound aspirate: Disinfect and inject fluid, abscess, or wound aspirate through rubber stopper. Imbed tissues into gel medium.

ESwab CoPan: Only acceptable for swabbed specimens (example: Wound) Tissues and fluids should never be collected in ESwab.

IDDL recommends the collection of two separate collection containers for aerobic and anaerobic cultures. Additional testing, such as gram staining or aerobic cultures, can be performed on an anaerobic sample, but it is not recommended.
Causes for Rejection:Consult with Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (IDDL) before cancelling.
