Methodology:BACTEC culture method (fluorescence)
Test Includes:Culture for yeast. The yeast/fungal culture is performed by incubating routine aerobic blood culture vial for a longer period and subculturing. For suspected histoplasma, blastomyces, coccidiodes, cryptococcus or filamentous fungi, request BLF (Blood culture, fungal).
Turnaround Time:Preliminary results are updated daily. Negative finals are reported at 14 days. Care provider is contacted if culture is positive.

Optimal Volume:Adult: 8-10 mL, 3mL minimum, in BACTEC Plus Aerobic/F
Minimum\Peds Volume:Pediatric: 3 mL, 1 mL minimum in BACTEC Peds Plus/F

Contraindications:Insufficient specimen decreases recovery of organisms.

Critical Range:Isolation of yeast or filamentous fungus should be considered significant.
