Use: | Broad assessment of several organ systems.
Anion gap is used for diagnosis of metabolic acidosis (marked elevation). Above 30 mmol/L, gap increase is commonly secondary to lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis. Unmeasured cations include K, Ca, Mg; unmeasured anions include protein, PO4, SO4, organic acids. Reference Range: 3-14 mmol/L using a calculation: Na - (Cl + CO2). |
