Collection Instructions
Specimen: | Blood and CSF |
Optimal Volume: | 2 mL CSF and 2 mL blood |
Minimum\Peds Volume: | 1.5 mL CSF and 1.2 mL blood |
Container: | Red (no gel) Alternate Containers: Sterile tube, Red or gold (gel) |
Collection Instructions: | Collect CSF specimen in a sterile container, collect blood specimen in a red/black top (gel) tube. Blood specimen must be collected within 48 hours of CSF. Specimens need to be assayed together for interpretation. |
Causes for Rejection: | Hemolysis is associated with falsely elevated levels of MBP in the CSF. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Send serum, collected within 2 days of CSF, with the CSF specimen. Centrifuge at room temperature. CSF: aliquot 2 mL, 1.5 mL minimum; serum: 1 mL, 0.5 mL minimum. If all available CSF is bloody, centrifuge the sample and separate supernatant from cells prior to freezing. Store in freezer. |
