Collection Instructions:When collecting a blood specimen for alcohol testing, use a nonalcohol-based cleanser at the venipuncture site.
Timing of specimen collection: Dependent on time of exposure, test upon presentation to hospital.
Causes for Rejection:Whole blood; collected in a gel tube.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and separate from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 3 mL, 0.5 mL minimum, serum or plasma. Cap tube tightly to minimize alcohol loss. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:After separation from cells: 1 week at room temperature; 2 weeks refrigerated; 1 month frozen.

Interpretive

Critical Range:Toxic level: >20 mg/dL.
Toxic concentrations may cause intoxication, metabolic acidosis, ocular toxicity, CNS depression, and fatality if patients do not receive medical treatment.
Therapeutic Range:No therapeutic range; limit of detection: 5 mg/dL
