Causes for Rejection: | PTH is not stable in a red/black top tube. |
Contraindications: | Large doses of biotin (10 mg or more per day) may cause clinically significant interference in PTHI levels. If interference is suspected, it is strongly recommended that biotin is discontinued for at least one week prior to retesting. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Process immediately. (At UMMC give directly to Chemistry for processing). Centrifuge and aliquot 1.5 mL, 0.4 mL minimum. Store plasma refrigerated; do not freeze. Serum is not recommended, but accepted if separated from cells within 2 hours of collection. |
Shipping Instructions: | Ship plasma at refrigerated temperature in a STAT bag. |
Stability: | 8 hours at room temperature; 72 hours refrigerated; 8 months frozen. |

Reference Range: | Roche: 15-65 pg/mL
Architect: 10-82 pg/mL All: A greater than 50% drop in PTH value 10 minutes post-resection indicates that all hypersecreting tissue has been removed. |
Use: | Confirmation of successful removal of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue. |
