HSV-1 has been implicated in cold sores and genital herpes. HSV-2 causes 70 to 90 percent of primary genital herpes infections with HSV-1 causing the remainder. HSV-2 genital infections recur in greater than 95% of cases, with up to four to five recurrences per year. Genital HSV-1 averages only one recurrence per year in about half of the cases.
