Specimen:Urine, random or 24 hour collection
Optimal Volume:4 mL
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Alternate Containers: 3 L plastic jug
Collection Instructions:Refrigerate; 24 hour collection is preferred.
Patient Preparation:Refrain from alcohol consumption 24 hours prior to collection.
Causes for Rejection:Room temperature specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Aliquot 4 mL, 1.2 mL minimum. Store in freezer. Record total volume and collection time interval on transport tube.
Shipping Instructions:Ship refrigerated.

Interpretive

Reference Range:0-35 umol/L; 0-60 umol/24 hours
Use:Markedly increased in lead poisoning (may not have increased coproporphyrin excretion). Also may be elevated in the congenital hepatic porphyrias during acute attacks of acute intermittent porphyria, variegate porphyria and hereditary coproporphyria.
