Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood and bronchial wash or BAL
Optimal Volume:2 mL blood or 1 mL bronchial wash or BAL
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.2 mL blood or 0.5 mL bronchial wash or BAL
Container:Purple (EDTA) (Plastic leakproof container, sterile)
Causes for Rejection:Samples other than plasma, bronchial wash or BAL.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge or aliquot 1 mL; 0.5 mL minimum plasma or bronchial wash or BAL. Store refrigerated.
Shipping Instructions:Ship refrigerated.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory  (UMMC-East Bank)


Interpretive

Reference Range:

Negative

HSV 1&2 DNA not detected by PCR

Positive

HSV 1 DNA detected by PCR

HSV 2 DNA detected by PCR

A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Herpes simplex virus DNA concentrations below the level of detection by the assay.
