Collection Instructions

Specimen:Respiratory specimen: sputum, tracheal aspirates, nasopharyngeal swab, pleural fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), bronchial brushings.

Collection Instructions:
  • Fluid: Collect 2 mL, 0.5 mL minimum in sterile container or viral transport media (M4 or UTM).
  • Swabs: Place in viral transport media.
Causes for Rejection:Dry swabs and nonsterile or leaking containers. Respiratory aspirates in collection containers with tubing. Specimen tends to leak from these containers, compromising specimen. Tissue in optimal cutting temperature compound.

Specimen Processing:Indicate specimen source on sample container. Store frozen.
Shipping Instructions:Ship on dry ice.
