Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:4 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.2 mL
Container:Green (sodium heparin, no gel or lithium heparin, no gel) protect from light
Alternate Containers: Green (lithium heparin, gel) protect from light
Collection Instructions:Collect following an overnight (12-24) fast (water only). For infants, collect prior to next feeding). Protect specimen from light.
Causes for Rejection:Samples not protected from light; EDTA plasma, or serum. Gross lipemia.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Within 2 hours of collection: Centrifuge and aliquot 2 mL; 0.5 mL minimum, into light protected vial. Store refrigerated.
Shipping Instructions:Ship refrigerated. Protect from light.
Stability:Light protected 72 hours room temperature, 28 days refrigerated (preferred) or frozen.
