| Causes for Rejection: | Frozen, clotted or whole blood specimens with RBCs not separated after centrifugation. Plasma sample. Specimens collected in tubes other than royal blue (EDTA). Specimens transported in containers other than royal blue (EDTA) or Trace Element-Free Transport tube. |
Processing and Shipping
| Specimen Processing: | Centrifuge whole blood within 2 hours of collection and discard plasma. Aliquot 2 mL, 0.6 mL minimum of RBCs immediately into a metal-free plastic vial. |

Interpretive
| Reference Range: | 3.6 - 7.5 mg/dL
RBC magnesium results reflect the intracellular stores and general homeostasis of magnesium. Results may be falsely low if RBCs in the submitted specimen are lysed or not promptly separated from plasma. To convert concentration to micromoles per liter (mmol/L); divide the result by 2.43. |
