Methodology:Isolator tube or SPS tube.
Test Includes:Culture for filamentous fungi. Includes Malassezia on request.
Turnaround Time:Cultures are looked at daily. Preliminary results are updated Mon-Fri. Negative finals are reported at 4 weeks. Physician is contacted if culture is positive.

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood or bone marrow
Optimal Volume:8 mL blood or 4 mL bone marrow
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.5 mL blood or bone marrow or low volume blood
Container:SPS tube (Isolator tube, See Collection Instructions)
Collection Instructions:
  • For patients where Histoplasma, Blastomyces, Coccidioides or Cryptococcus are suspected (e.g., HIV patients may be at risk for these agents), place 8 mL blood into SPS (Liquod) culture tube (blood or bone marrow) or 6 mL Isolator tube (blood only). If 8 mL blood cannot be obtained, place minimum of 1.5 mL blood into an 8 mL (SPS) fungal culture tube. Specify suspected organism on request form.
  • In infants (less than 11 lb/5 Kg) with suspected Malassezia or Histoplasma, inoculate an SPS tube. Specify suspected organism on request form.
Patient Preparation:
See Blood Collection for Cultures (Bacterial, Fungal, Viral) under Laboratory Procedures.  
Contraindications:Insufficient specimen decreases recovery of organisms and inadequate dilution of SPS in fungal tube may inhibit detection. Clotted unsatisfactory.

Specimen Processing:Whole blood or bone marrow. Store at room temperature.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature. Must arrive within 24 hours.

Critical Range:Isolation of filamentous fungus should be considered significant.
Reference Range:No growth.
