Use: | GAD antibodies are present in the majority of individuals with new-onset diabetes and in individuals in the prediabetic phase of the disease. GAD antibodies appear early in the disease process prior to clinical symptoms and can be used to produce who will develop IDDM. Because GAD antibody is present in association with islet cell destruction, it can also be utilized to differentiate IDDM from non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM). The development of GAD antibody in NIDDM patients can be useful to determine which patients may later require insulin therapy. |
