Collection Instructions

Specimen:Direct smear from open wound.
Container:SurePath collection vial
Collection Instructions:Required supplies: SurePath pap vial and collection brush. Label vial with the patient label. Gently scrape the area of abnormality. If the abnormality is a vesicle, remove the covering and scrape both at the base of the vesicle and around the rim. Disconnect brush tip and put in vial. Submit the specimen and the completed test request form to the Cytology Laboratory.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Send specimen to Cytology through the Pathology Laboratory at UMMC West Bank, FSH, FRH.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Cytology  (UMMC-East Bank, St. Joseph's)


Interpretive

Use:Detection and characterization of inflammatory infection processes of the skin, especially herpetic infection.
