Methodology:Giemsa stain
Test Includes:Microscopic exam of thick and thin peripheral blood smears, examination of skin snip preparations, or smears prepared from concentrated smears (Knott's concentrate) prepared from whole blood received in a citrate tube. (Specimen of choice depends on the species suspected.)
Turnaround Time:Performed daily; 0730-1530. Results are reported within 1-2 days. Contact the IDDL Laboratory and Medical Director for testing at other times.
Special Instructions:

If possible, notify the laboratory in advance. Indicate clinical and travel history on request form:

·          Specify parasite suspected.

·          Provide patient’s travel history.

·          Indicate whether the patient has been previously diagnosed, and if so what parasites were identified and approximate date.

·          Provide a brief description of symptoms.

Call for suggested collection times specific to the microfilariae suspected.


Collection Instructions

Container:Microbiology containers (Plastic leakproof container, sterile)
Collection Instructions:Minimum three thin and three thick blood smears. Skin snips submitted in sterile saline. Whole blood in citrate tube for Knott's concentrate.

Specimen Processing:Store at room temperature.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature.

Critical Range:Positive result.
Reference Range:Negative
