Methodology:Giemsa stain
Test Includes:Microscopic exam of smears of bone marrow, tissue imprints, or scrapings or aspirates from the edge of a lesion. (Specimen of choice depends on the species suspected.)
Turnaround Time:Performed Mon-Fri; 0730-1530. Results reported within 1-2 days. Contact the Microbiology Laboratory and Medical Director for testing at other times.
Special Instructions:

If possible, notify the laboratory in advance. Indicate clinical and travel history on request form:

·          Specify parasite suspected.

·          Provide patient’s travel history.

·          Indicate whether the patient has been previously diagnosed, and if so what parasites were identified and approximate date.

·          Provide a brief description of symptoms.

Serological tests are available through reference labs.

Specimen:Bone Marrow, tissue biopsy, scraping or aspirate
Container:Microbiology containers (Plastic leakproof container, sterile)

Specimen Processing:Store at room temperature.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature.
