Special Instructions:Deliver ectoparasites live if possible. Do not use preservatives.

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Ticks, lice, mites, bedbugs. Scabies requires scrapings from burrows in skin.
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Collection Instructions:Submit live organisms in container without preservative.

For scabies collection:
  1. Place a drop of mineral oil on a sterile scalpel blade.
  2. Allow some of the oil to flow onto the papule.
  3. Scrape vigorously 6 or 7 times to remove the top of the papule (there should be tiny flecks of blood in the oil).
  4. Transfer the oil and scraped material to a glass slide.
  5. Add 1 or 2 extra drops of mineral oil to the slide and stir the mixture.
  6. Place a second slide on top of the slide with collected material.
  7. Secure ends of slide with tape, ensuring area with scrapings is not obscured.
  8. Label slide with patient's name and MR#.
  9. Place slide in a sterile cup and screw top lid on.
Causes for Rejection:Use of preservatives or severely damaged parasites.
