Synonyms: | CMV Viral Load; CMV DNA by PCR; CMV PCR
Methodology: | Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
CPT Codes: | 87497 x1 | ||
Turnaround Time: | Testing is performed Mon-Sat; results are reported within 2 days.
Special Instructions: | Testing is performed on EDTA plasma (EDTAP or PL), urine (U) and bronchial lavage (BRO or BAL) only! Tissue specimens, amniotic fluid, CSF, pericardial fluid, bone marrow and pleural fluid have not been validated and are sent to a reference laboratory for testing. |
Collection Instructions
Specimen: | Plasma, bronchial lavage, urine |
Optimal Volume: | 4 mL blood; 2 mL bronchial lavage or urine |
Minimum\Peds Volume: | 2.2 mL blood (0.7 mL for children under 3 years of age or younger only); 1 mL bronchial lavage or urine |
Container: | 10 mL Purple EDTA tube Alternate Containers: Plastic leakproof container, sterile, Purple (EDTA) |
Collection Instructions: | A minimum plasma sample volume of 0.25 mL is acceptable for children 3 years of age or younger. |
Causes for Rejection: | Specimens other than EDTA plasma, bronchial lavage or urine will be sent to reference laboratory for testing. Specimens that do not meet the minimum volume requirement will be rejected as quantity not sufficient. Urine specimens in grey top preservative tubes are not acceptable. Urine specimens collected on cotton balls are not accepted. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: |
|
Shipping Instructions: | Ship plasma, BAL and urine at refrigerated or frozen temperature. Never freeze whole blood. |
Stability: | Plasma, BAL or urine are stable at refrigerated temperature (2-8 degrees C) up to 7 days or frozen (-20 to -80 degrees C) up to 40 days. |
Test Performed at or Referral Lab | Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (UMMC East Bank) |
Interpretive
Reference Range: | Not Detected.
Reportable range of 137 to 9,100,000 IU/mL (2.1 to 7.0 log IU/mL). Pediatric samples of less than 0.25 mL will be released with the following statement: This sample was diluted 1:1 with a phosphate buffered saline solution to achieve the minimum volume for testing. Result reported should be interpreted with caution. Very low levels of CMV may not be detected. |
Use: | This is a nucleic acid amplification test for the quantification of cytomegalovirus DNA in plasma, bronch lavage and urine.
