Sunquest Code:BGCOB
Epic Code:LAB5691Epic Name:Blood Gas Capillary with OXYHGB
Order Instructions:Use test code for arterial (BGAOB), venous (BGVOB), capillary (BGCOB), or type unknown (BGBOB). No reference ranges print with BGBOB.
Synonyms:Blood Gas; CBG
Methodology:Specific electrodes (pH, pCO2, pO2); spectrophotometric analysis of hemolysate. % OxyHb = cOxyHb/ctHb; %O2Sat = cOxyHb/(ctHb -[cCOHb + cMetHb])
Test Includes:pH, pCO2, pO2, derived HCO3, oxyhemoglobin
Turnaround Time:Performed and reported 24 hours/day.
Special Instructions:UMMC: Whole blood sodium, potassium, chloride, CO2, ionized calcium, lactate and glucose may be requested on this specimen. Provide FIO2 on request form. Whole blood potassium is stable at room temperature for 2 hours. Whole blood potassium is stable on ice/gel packs for 30 minutes.

Collection Instructions

Optimal Volume:0.1 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.06 mL
Container:Capillary (lithium heparin) gas tube
Collection Instructions:

Deliver to laboratory immediately; if received within 30 minutes, ice is not required. The puncture should be deep enough to allow a free flow of blood. Collect into heparinized capillary tube, which is free of air bubbles, filled as much as possible, and capped on both ends.
