Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:1 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL (3 mL syringe); 0.2 mL (tuberculin syringe)
Container:Dry heparin syringe
Collection Instructions:

Specimen should be free of air bubbles. Deliver to laboratory immediately; if received within 30 minutes, ice is not required.

Venous or arterial catheter

Remove any bubbles present, cap and mix thoroughly.

Venipuncture

Collect venous samples without tourniquet. Do not allow patient to clench/unclench hand (this builds up lactic acid).

Specimen Processing:Do not store.
Shipping Instructions:Ship on wet ice to arrive within 2 hours. UMMC, FLMC and FNMC only: Do not send in PTS.
Stability:Whole blood potassium is stable at room temperature for 2 hours. Whole blood potassium is stable on ice/gel pacs for 30 minutes.
