Critical Range:
Age
0 - 71 h Less than 40 or greater than 200 mg/dL
3 d - 5 mo Less than 51 or greater than 200 mg/dL
6 mo and older Less than 51 or greater than 500 mg/dL
Whole Blood Testing Critical Values and Reference Ranges
Reference Range:
Fasting glucose is defined as no caloric intake for 8 hours. Casual glucose is defined as any time of day without regard to time since last meal.  Casual glucose range is dependent upon food intake, intravenous fluids and parenteral nutrition.
Age Fasting Casual
0-47 h 40-99 mg/dL 50-139 mg/dL
48 h - 5 mo 51-99 mg/dL 51-139 mg/dL
6 mo & older 70-99 mg/dL 70-139 mg/dL
A fasting glucose greater than 126 mg/dL or a casual plasma glucose greater than 200 mg/dL, if confirmed on a subsequent day, meets the threshold for the diagnosis of diabetes, and precludes the need for a glucose challenge.
