Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot 1.4 mL, 0.7 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Samples suspected of having macroglobulins or cryoglobulins should be collected and held at 37°C. Samples suspected of containing cold agglutinins should not be refrigerated prior to serum separation from clot.

Use:This combination of tests should be requested when the physician seeing the patient would like an immunofixation automatically performed on the same serum specimen to characterize a suspected monoclonal immunoglobulin(s) that has been seen on regular serum electrophoresis (ELP). As an example, for anyone in whom there may be a clinical suspicion of multiple myeloma, we suggest a serum protein electrophoresis with automatic reflex to immunofixation be ordered.
