Patient Preparation:Fasting or non-fasting samples can be used for risk assessment in primary prevention and for assessment of baseline LDL-C levels before the initiation of a statin primary and secondary prevention. If triglyceride levels are 400 mg/dL or higher, a repeat lipid profile in the fasting state should be performed.

If fasting is needed, please follow the instructions below for preparation:
  • Do not eat 10-12 hours before your appointment if you are coming in fasting for labs on lipids, cholesterol or glucose (sugar). This does not apply to pregnant women.
  • Water, tea or black coffee (with nothing added) is okay. Do not drink other fluids, diet soda or chew gum.
  • If you have concerns about taking your medications, please send a message by clicking on Secure Messaging, Message Your Care Team.
Causes for Rejection:Specimens not centrifuged within two hours of collection.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Separate serum/plasma from cells asap. Centrifuge and aliquot 1.25 mL, 0.3 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Roche: Ch, Tr, HDL: 2 days room temperature; 7 days refrigerated; 3 months frozen. LDL: 7 days refrigerated; 3 months frozen.
Vista: 24 hours at room temperature; 7 days refrigerated; 3 months frozen.

Pediatric reference ranges for Total Cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, Non- HDL Cholesterol and Triglycerides are taken from the 2011 National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute Expert Panel on Integrated Guidelines for Cardiovascular Health and Risk Reduction in Children and Adolescents.
