Patient Preparation:Fasting specimen is preferred.
Please do not eat 10-12 hours before your appointment if you are coming in fasting for labs on lipids, cholesterol, or glucose (sugar). This does not apply to pregnant women.
Water, hot tea and black coffee (with nothing added ) is okay. Do not drink other fluids, diet soda or chew gum.

Baseline level must be collected before Schilling test, transfusions or B12 therapy is started.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum within 2 hours of collection. Store in refrigerator up to 48 hours; otherwise, freeze.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature to arrive within 48 hours.
Stability:2 hours at room temperature; 48 hours refrigerated; 56 days frozen. Freeze only once.
