Iodine, Serum

Abbrev Code:IODINB
Order Code:LAB5732Order Name:Iodine Serum
Methodology:Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry
CPT Codes: 83789 x1
Turnaround Time:Specimens are sent to the reference laboratory Mon-Fri; results are reported within 1-4 days.
Special Instructions:Disinfectants (such as Betadine) that contain iodine should not be used during venipuncture. High concentrations of gadolinium are known to interfere with most metals tests. If gadolinium-containing contrast media has been administered, a specimen should not be collected for 96 hours.
Compliance:

This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Mayo Clinic. This test has not been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Referral Lab number:IOD

Interpretive

Reference Range:40-92 ng/mL Values between 80 ng/mL and 250 ng/mL have been reported to indicate hyperthyroidism. Values >250 ng/mL may indicate iodine overload.
Use:The measurement of iodine serves as an index of adequate dietary iodine intake and iodine overload, particularly from iodine-containing drugs such as amiodarone.
