Collection Instructions

Specimen:Endotrachael suction
Optimal Volume:1 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.25 mL
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Causes for Rejection:Specimens older than 2 hours that have not been refrigerated; specimens over 24 hours old. Viscous samples or samples collected in endotracheal tubing will be reordered as a routine Endotracheal Culture. Quantitation cannot be performed accurately on these types of specimens.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Do not process. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Samples are stable for 2 hours at room temperature and then must be refrigerated. Refrigerated specimens must arrive within 24 hours.

Reference Range:No growth to normal flora
Use:To aid in the diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia.
