Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood, body fluid or CSF
Optimal Volume:2 mL blood; 1 mL CSF or body fluid
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.2 mL blood; 0.5 mL CSF or body fluid
Container:Red (no gel)
Alternate Containers: Sterile tube, Plastic leakproof container, sterile, Purple (EDTA)
Causes for Rejection:Gross hemolysis; stored at room temperature >6 hours.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:

Allow blood samples to clot for 30 minutes from time of collection. Centrifuge for 15 minutes at 1000-1500 g (rcf) at room temperature.


Aliquot into two vials with 250 uL per vial. Freeze immediately a ≤ -20°C (-70°C preferred). Contact Cytokine Lab if there is adequate sample for only one vial.
