Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:2 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.4 mL
Container:Green (sodium heparin, no gel) on ICE
Collection Instructions:Do not send via Pneumatic Tube System (PTS). The PTS does NOT impact the integrity of the sample; however the sample could possibly be lost in the PTS and these timed samples are considered irretrievable. Samples should be hand-delivered to the lab.
Busulfan samples are drawn at scheduled times, depending on which protocol the patient is on:
  • 6 hour protocol: Collections are at 6, 7, 8 and 10 am. On follow-up days there is an additional draw around 4 am.
  • 24 hour protocol: Collections are at 4, 4:15, 5, 7, 9 and 11 am. On follow-up days there is an additional draw around 1 am.

  Collections must be completed prior to 10:00 am or 11:00 am  (depending on dosing protocol) to be performed the same day. Label tubes with exact collect time. Locations other than UMMC-East Bank, send via stat courier.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:
UMMC East Centrifuge and aliquot samples collected prior to 6 am. Store frozen. Call Drug Analysis for STAT pickup.
Call Drug Analysis, 6 am - 4 pm, when unprocessed collection tube on wet ice arrives.
UMMC West Satellite Lab Centrifuge and aliquot samples collected prior to 6 am; place in red stat bag, batch and walk to ACL-W freezer for 0630 courier. As each additional sample arrives, keep on wet ice, place unprocessed tube in red stat bag, batch, call for a stat courier, and walk to ACL-W refrigerator for courier.
All Other Sites or
after hours process		 Centrifuge and aliquot 1 mL, 0.12 mL minimum within 2 hours of collection and freeze.
 Do not send samples in the PTS.
Shipping Instructions:All other sites or after-hours: ship plasma frozen on dry ice.
