Contraindications:Large doses of biotin (10 mg or more per day) may cause clinically significant interference in PSA tumor marker levels. If interference is suspected, it is strongly recommended that biotin is discontinued for at least one week prior to retesting.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot within 4 hours of collection 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature. Alternatively, ship on dry ice.
Stability:7 days refrigerated; up to 4 months frozen at -80°C.

Use:Elevated in many patients with prostate cancer, as well as in some patients with prostatic hypertrophy. Primarily used to track progression of prostatic carcinoma, monitor therapeutic response, and identify recurrence of disease. Half life is approximately 2 days.
