Special Instructions:Limited utility as an indicator of deficiency as concentration does not correlate well with intake. Serum or plasma measurements are best for assessment of deficiency over short periods of time. For acute toxicity, zinc in urine may be a more reliable indicator of exposure.

Causes for Rejection:Specimens collected in tubes other than Royal Blue (EDTA). Specimens transported in containers other than Royal Blue (EDTA) Tube or Trace Element Free Transport Tube. Clotted or grossly hemolyzed specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge whole blood within 2 hours of collection and discard plasma. Leave 2 mL, 0.6 minimum, RBC's in the original container and replace stopper. Store at room temperature or refrigerated. Alternatively transfer 2 mL RBCs itno an ARUP Trace Element-Free Transport Tube.
Shipping Instructions:Ship RBC's at room temperature or refrigerated.
Stability:After separation from plasma: 2 weeks at room temperature or refrigerated; unacceptable frozen.
