Collection Instructions

Optimal Volume:2 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.2 mL
Container:Red (no gel)
Alternate Containers: Purple (EDTA)
Collection Instructions:Trough levels: Collect immediately prior to the next dose. Peak levels: Collect 60 minutes after the end of IV infusion; 1-2 hours if decreased renal function.
Causes for Rejection:Processed >4 hours after collection and the patient is receiving beta-lactam antibiotics or cephalosporins. Gross hemolysis.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot 1 mL, 0.5 mL minimum. Indicate peak and trough level.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:8 hours at room temperature; 48 hours refrigerated; 4 weeks frozen.
