Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:0.7 mL plus 0.2 mL for each additional allergen
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL plus 0.1 mL for each additional allergen
Container:Red or gold (gel)
Alternate Containers: Red (no gel)
Causes for Rejection:Hemolyzed, icteric or lipemic specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and separate serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Aliquot 0.25 mL plus 0.1 mL for each additional allergen; or 0.25 mL plus 0.04 mL minimum for each additional allergen. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:48 hours at room temperature; 2 weeks refrigerated; 1 year frozen.

Use:Allergen results of 0.10-0.34 kU/L are intended for specialist use as the clinical relevance is undetermined. Even though increasing concentrations of allergen-specific IgE, these concentrations may not correlate with the degree of clinical response or skin testing results when challenged with a specific allergen. The correlation of allergy laboratory results with clinical history and in vivo reactivity to specific allergens is essential. A negative test may not rule out clinical allergy or even anaphylaxis.
