Collection Instructions

Specimen:CSF or Tissue; Blood
Optimal Volume:1 mL CSF or 2 mL blood
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL CSF or 1.2 mL blood
Container:Sterile tube
Alternate Containers: Container, Tissue, sterile, Purple (EDTA), Red or gold (gel)
Collection Instructions:Collect tissue in a sterile container and freeze immediately. Indicate specimen source on container.
Causes for Rejection:Room temperature or refrigerated tissue. Heparinized specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Separate serum or plasma from cells or send 1 mL whole blood or CSF. Aliquot 1 mL; 0.5 mL minimum serum, plasma, whole blood or CSF to a sterile container. Store whole blood refrigerated; all others frozen.
Shipping Instructions:Ship whole blood refrigerated; all others frozen.
Stability:Whole blood is stable for 7 days at room temperature, refrigerated or frozen. Tissue is stable for 1 month frozen. All others are stable for 24 hours at room temperature; 5 days refrigerated; 1 month frozen.
