Collect sample before patient is given therapeutic iron or a blood transfusion. Blood transfusion can transiently increase in serum ferritin that peaks 24 hours post-transfusion, particularly if the blood has been stored for a longer period. (Blood 2011 Dec 15; 118(25):6675-82; Blood 1980 July;56(1):138-140).Therefore, if a patient has received blood, delay testing for several days to avoid false elevation of ferritin. |
Causes for Rejection: | Gross hemolysis; gross icterus |
Contraindications: | Large doses of biotin (10 mg or more per day) may cause clinically significant interference in ferritin levels. If interference is suspected, it is strongly recommended that biotin is discontinued for at least one week prior to retesting. |
