Special Instructions:BK Virus DNA Quantitative Real Time PCR (BKQT) is the preferred test. Only serum samples are sent to ARUP.

This test uses a manufacturer labeled Analyte Specific Reagent (ASR) as the reagent providing the specificity of the assay. The test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ARUP Laboratories. It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. This test was performed in a CLIA certified laboratory and is intended for clinical purposes.

Collection Instructions

Optimal Volume:2 mL blood
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.2 mL blood
Container:Red (no gel)
Alternate Containers: Red or gold (gel)
Causes for Rejection:Heparinized specimen or frozen whole blood.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot 1.5 mL, 0.5 mL minimum. Store frozen.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:24 hours at room temperature; 72 hours refrigerated; 1 month frozen.

Use:BK virus is an important cause of hemorrhagic cystitis. Patients at risk for nephropathy due to infection with the BK virus are identified by the presence of viral DNA in their urine and plasma. This assay may be useful in regulating the dose of immunosuppressive therapy.
