Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:4 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:2.6 mL
Container:Purple (EDTA)
Causes for Rejection:Heparinized and serum specimens are not acceptable for testing.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot 2 mL, 1.2 mL minimum, within 24 hours of collection. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated or frozen temperature.
Stability:Stability: Plasma is stable at refrigerated temperature (2-8 degrees C) up to 5 days, or frozen (-20 to -80 degrees C) for up to 40 days.

Interpretive

Use:HIVHLD is used by Employee Occupational Health Service and Infection Prevention for exposure incidents. This test is not orderable in EPIC. The HIVHLD tube (a purple, EDTA specimen) will be drawn and processed as indicated above. Plasma specimens are sent to IDDL where the tube is held for 30 days in the event that an HIV PCR is needed through the HIV testing algorithm.
