IDDL Stool Collection Container Guidelines

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Feces
Optimal Volume:3 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL
Container:Cary Blair Transport Media or C&S (Fecal swab for low volume stools only)
Collection Instructions:Feces: Collect in clean, dry bedpan or onto newspaper placed over toilet seat. Those portions of stool containing blood, pus or mucus are especially significant. Immediately place specimen in Cary-Blair transport media (Para-Pak C&S); place at 2-8 C until transport to the lab. Sample must be placed in Cary-Blair within 2 hours of collection.
Causes for Rejection:Samples received in sterile containers more than 2 hours from collection.Preserved stool not received at performing laboratory within 48 hours will be cancelled. Samples received on patients hospitalized for greater than 3 days will be cancelled without prior consultation with Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Sample must be placed in Cary-Blair by the receiving lab within 2 hours of collection. Preserved specimen must arrive in IDDL (performing laboratory) within 48 hours of collection. If collected as Fecal Swab, receiving lab must transfer to ParaPak C&S container within 2 hours of collection. Store specimens at refrigerated temperature.
Shipping Instructions:Ship specimens at refrigerated temperature in Cary-Blair. Must arrive within 48 hours.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory   (UMMC East Bank)

Interpretive

Reference Range:Negative for all targets.
Use:
Verigene Enteric Pathogens Nucleic Acid Test (EP) is a multiplexed, qualitative test for simultaneous detection and identification of common pathogenic enteric bacteria, viruses and genetic virulence markers from stool (in Cary-Blair preservative medium). EP utilizes reverse transcription, PCR and array hybridization to detect the following targets:
  • Campylobacter Group (composed of C.coli, C.jejuni and C.lari)
  • Salmonella species
  • Shigella species (including S.dysenteriae, S.boydii, S.sonnei and S.flexneri)
  • Vibrio Group (compsed of V.cholerae and V.parahaemolyticus)
  • Yersinia enterocolitica
  • Norovirus GI/GII
  • Rotavirus A
  • Shiga Toxin 1 & 2 genes (Shiga toxin producing E.coli typically harbors one or both genes)
