Collection Instructions: | Testing requires BOTH serum and citrated plasma samples, as well as an automated platelet count. Collect 6 mL; 2.6 mL minimum in a red or gold (gel) or red (no gel) AND 2.7 mL (in 3 mL tube) in a Blue Na Citrate, 3.2% tube - fill to fill line on tube. If a platelet count has not been performed in the last 3 days, draw a purple (EDTA) tube and add to the existing order. |
Causes for Rejection: | Hemolyzed specimens. All required specimens not received. No platelet count received. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Centrifuge and aliquot 3 mL, 1.2 mL minimum serum AND 1 mL, 0.5 mL minimum platelet-poor citrated plasma. See Associated Links for processing instructions for platelet-poor plasma. Keep aliquots together and store frozen. Do not send the EDTA whole blood to ARUP. |
Shipping Instructions: | Ship samples together on dry ice. Include automated platelet count with aliquot containers. |
Stability: | Serum: 8 hours at room temperature; 1 week refrigerated; 2 weeks frozen.
