Collection Instructions

Specimen:Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), nasopharyngeal aspirate, swab, or washing, or tracheal aspirate, sputum, throat, tissue
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Alternate Containers: Viral Transport Media
Collection Instructions:
 
  • Fluids: Transfer 3 mL; 0.5 mL minimum, specimen into a sterile container. Also acceptable: Transfer to 3 mL viral transport media. Indicate specimen source on container.
  • Nasopharyngeal swab or tissue: Place tissue or swab in 3 mL of viral transport media. Indicate specimen source on container.
  • Swabs only: If sending via PTS, the specimen must be placed in a lab specimen bag with an absorbent pad and then placed into another lab specimen bag.
Causes for Rejection:Calcium alginate, eSwab, dry or wood swabs; frozen specimens.

Specimen Processing:Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:2 hours at room temperature; 72 hours refrigerated.
