Specimen:Fresh or fixed tissue; see entity policy for specimens exempt from mandatory pathology examination.

Collection Instructions:If special studies (e.g., chromosome analysis) are contemplated, contact Surgical Pathology for appropriate technique or fixative and ensure this request is documented in the Placenta Path order. Chromosome analysis cannot be performed on placentas placed in formalin fixative. The volume of fixative should be 10-15 times the volume of the tissue. The container should be large enough to allow specimen removal after hardening by fixative.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store fixed specimens at room temperature. Placentas requiring chromosome analysis must be kept fresh and place into the refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship fixed specimens at room temperature.
