Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood

Causes for Rejection:Moderate hemolysis; frozen plasma; whole blood EDTA not processed within 24 hours. Sample collected in pediatric EDTA MAP tube.
Contraindications:Large doses of biotin (10 mg or more per day) may cause clinically significant interference in PTHI levels. If interference is suspected, it is strongly recommended that biotin is discontinued for at least one week prior to retesting.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Process within 24 hours; 2 hours preferred. Centrifuge and aliquot 1.5 mL, 0.4 mL minimum. Store plasma refrigerated; do not freeze.
Serum is not recommended, but accepted if separated from cells within 2 hours of collection and assayed within 8 hours of collection or frozen. See Stability.
Shipping Instructions:Ship plasma at refrigerated temperature to arrive within 72 hours of collection for lithium heparin plasma, or 14 days for EDTA plasma. Ship serum on dry ice.
Stability:Plasma: 2 days at room temperature; 3 days refrigerated; 6 months frozen. Freeze only once.
Serum: 8 hours at room temperature; 2 days refrigerated; 6 months frozen. Freeze only once.

Reference Range:15-65 pg/mL
Use:Used for evaluation of hypercalcemia.
