Collection Instructions
Specimen: | Blood |
Optimal Volume: | 3 mL purple (EDTA) tube or 5 mL plasma preparation tube (PPT). |
Minimum\Peds Volume: | 1.6 mL purple (EDTA) tube only |
Container: | White top plasma preparation tube PPT Alternate Containers: Purple (EDTA) |
Collection Instructions: | Collect a standard purple (EDTA) tube. Alternatively, collect 5 mL whole blood in a PPT tube (do not underfill). Do not share specimen with other tests. |
Causes for Rejection: | Plasma separated from whole blood more than 6 hours (PPT) or more than 24 hours (K2-EDTA) after draw. Unfrozen specimen received at Karius more than 96 hours after draw. Specimen with incomplete or improper separations of plasma. Specimen collected in an expired tube. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Within 24 hours of collection, centrifuge purple (EDTA) tubes and aliquot 2 mL; 0.7 mL minimum, into a sterile aliquot tube. Alternatively, within 6 hours of collection, centrifuge PPT Tube and store sample in the original tube. Do not share specimen. Room temperature samples must arrive at testing site within 96 hours of collection.

Shipping Instructions: | Ship plasma at room temperature to arrive within 96 hours of collection. East Core Sendouts only, ship frozen if specimen cannot arrive at the reference lab within 96 hours of collection. Do not ship whole blood. |
