Respiratory Panel PCR

Abbrev Code:RESPPCR
Order Code:LAB8167Order Name:Respiratory Panel PCR
Synonyms:Viral Panel, Respiratory; Extended Respiratory Virus Panel; Influenza, RSV, Adeno, Parainfluenza, Rhinovirus,Metapneumovirus; Viral PCR; Adenovirus; Enterovirus; Coronavirus; Mycoplasma pneumoniae; Chlamydia pneumoniae
Methodology:Multiplex nucleic acid amplification with probe detection.
CPT Codes: 87633 x1, 87581 x1, 87486 x1, 87633 x1, 87581 x1, 87486 x1
Test Includes:This test does not test for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). See COVID-19 (Coronavirus) PCR for testing information.

The following virus types and bacteria are identified in the panel: Adenovirus, Coronavirus, Human Metapneumovirus, Human Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, Influenza A (H1, H3, 2009 H1N1), Influenza B, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) A, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) B, Parainfluenza Virus (1, 2, 3 and 4), Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

This test detects Coronavirus 229E, HKU1, NL63 and OC43, but does not distinguish between them. It does not detect MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome), SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) or 2019-nCoV (2019 Novel) Coronavirus.
Turnaround Time:Performed 7 days/week; reported within 24-48 hours.

IDDL (Microbiology/Virology) Collection Container Guidelines, Nasopharyngeal Swab Collection

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Nasopharyngeal swab in universal transport media.
Bronchoalveolar lavage/bronchial washing in viral transport media.
Container:NP Swab in UTM
Alternate Containers: Plastic leakproof container, sterile for INPATIENT COLLECTION ONLY, BD Universal Transport Media
Collection Instructions:Nasopharyngeal swab: Insert flocked swab into nostril to back of nasopharynx. Rub nasopharynx and remove swab carefully. Put the swab into viral transport media.

Bronchial lavage: Obtain material in sterile container or add to tube of viral transport media.

If sending via PTS, the specimen must be placed in a lab specimen bag with an absorbent pad and then placed into another lab specimen bag.

For other respiratory samples, see Viral, Culture.
Causes for Rejection:Calcium-alginate swabs (shown to inhibit PCR), dry or moistened cotton swabs, non-respiratory specimens. Sputum, tracheal aspirates, tissue and throat swabs are not acceptable.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:12 hours at room temperature; 10 days refrigerated; 1 month frozen.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory   (UMMC East Bank)

Interpretive

Reference Range:No viral or bacterial targets detected.
Use:This is a multiplexed nucleic acid test for the qualitative detection and identification of multiple respiratory viral and bacterial nucleic acids in NP swabs and bronchoalveolar lavage/bronchial washing obtained from individuals exhibiting signs and symptoms or respiratory tract infection.
