Optimal Volume:Swab in 1 mL BD Universal Transport Media

Collection Instructions:
  • Eye, Mouth or Skin Swab: Use swab to collect the specimen. Alternately transfer the sample (using the fine sterile spatula) to Universal transport medium. For skin swabs, include the anatomical location of each swab collected.
  • Genital Swab: Rub genital lesion firmly with culture swab. Place in Universal transport medium.
  • Skin Lesion: Use a tuberculin syringe; collect fluid from at least six vesicles. Place in Universal transport medium.
Causes for Rejection:Calcium alginate swabs (shown to inhibit PCR); moistened cotton swabs or swabs with wooden shafts are not acceptable.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:All swabs must be collected with flocked swab in 1 mL Universal transport medium (UTM). Store refrigerated.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated specimen.
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory  (UMMC-East Bank)


Reference Range:HSV not detected.
Use:This test is for the qualitative detection and differentiation of Herpes Simplex Virus Types 1 & 2 DNA in mucocutaneous and cutaneous lesion swabs from patients with signs and symptoms of HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection.
