Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store in refrigerator. For intestinal aspirates: Store on ice.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at room temperature if specimen can arrive within 2 hours. If longer than 2 hours, ship refrigerated.
For intestinal parasites Ship on ice. Specimen must arrive within 24 hours.

Interpretive

Reference Range:No growth to normal flora
Use:Tracheal: To aid in the diagnosis of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia.
Intestinal: Evaluate imbalances between aerobic and anaerobic intestinal flora in patients with malabsorption.
Tissue: Determine the risk of wound sepsis to guide level of wound debridement.
