Test Includes: | Examination of Wright-Giemsa stained peripheral blood smear by pathologist with professional interpretive report. A CBC, differential and reticulocyte count are performed by Automated Hematology at the collection site's laboratory in conjunction with the slide preparation (see processing instructions). | ||
Turnaround Time: | Performed Mon-Fri, 0730-1600; results are available in 24 hours. Outside of these hours, the on-call hematopathology fellow may be paged for preliminary interpretation. | ||
Special Instructions: | Provide patient's age, pertinent history and requesting staff physician on request form. |

Specimen: | Blood smears and blood |
Optimal Volume: | 2-3 mL EDTA tube or 0.5 mL in an EDTA microtainer (do not fill more than 0.5 mL) |
Minimum\Peds Volume: | 1 mL EDTA tube or 0.3 mL in an EDTA microtainer. |
Container: | Purple (EDTA), Microscope slides |
Collection Instructions: | Immediately mix specimen 10 times by gentle inversion. |
Causes for Rejection: | Clotted specimen. Blood smears must be made within 4 hours of collection. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Prepare 4 unstained blood smears within 4 hours of specimen collection. |
Shipping Instructions: | Ship slides in protective slide holder at room temperature. Ship EDTA blood at refrigerated temperature. |

Interpretive
Reference Range: | Interpretive report by hematopathologist or pathologist. |
