Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood
Optimal Volume:6 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:1.4 mL
Container:Red or gold (gel) protect from light, Red (no gel) protect from light
Collection Instructions:Protect from light immediately after collection.
Causes for Rejection:Any specimen other than serum; refrigerated or room temperature specimens, specimens not protected from light, hemolyzed or icteric specimens.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge and aliquot within 1 hour of collection 3 mL, 0.6 mL minimum. Protect from light. Store in freezer.
Shipping Instructions:Ship on dry ice.
Stability:4 hours refrigerated; 1 month frozen.

Interpretive

Reference Range:60-200 ug/dL
Use:Carotenoid concentrations may be decreased due to:
  • inadequate dietary fat consumption
  • intestinal parasitic infection or other malabsorption disorders
  • Interactions from drugs such as ethanol, cholestyramine, weight loss drugs and fiber supplements, and
  • kidney, liver, or pancreatic deficiency

Carotenoid concentrations may be elevated due to hypothyroidism, hyperlipemia due to diabetes mellitus, myxedema, or chronic nephritis or vitamin supplementation.
Carotenoid testing is useful in evaluating vitamin A status, antioxidant levels and overall nutrition.
