Turnaround Time:Test is performed 24 hours per day/7 days per week. Results are reported within 3 hours of receipt in the Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory.

Specimen:Nasal and nasopharyngeal swab in Universal Viral Transport Medium
Container:BD Universal Transport Media
Collection Instructions:
  • Nasal or nasopharyngeal swab: Flocked swab in Universal Viral Transport Medium only.
  • Swabs only: If sending via PTS, the specimen must be placed in a lab specimen bag with an absorbent pad and then placed into another lab specimen bag.
Causes for Rejection:Specimen types other than nasopharyngeal or nasal swabs in Universal Transport Medium are not acceptable for testing with this methodology. Wooden swabs or calcium alginate swabs are not acceptable. ESwabs are not acceptable.
Contraindications:Recent patient exposure to FluMist or other live attenuated influenza vaccines may cause inaccurate positive results.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store in refrigerator. Specimes placed in transport medium can be stored up to 24 hours at room temperature or up to 7 days at 2-8°C prior to testing.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.

Use:This assay is for testing Influenza A, Influenza B and Respiratory Synctial Virus (RSV) and SARS-CoV-2 by PCR during influenza season, using nasopharyngeal swabs in patients with more severe symptoms who may need hospitalization.
