Collection Instructions

Specimen:Synovial Fluid
Optimal Volume:3 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:Laboratory will accept 1 mL or less if unable to obtain. Labeled; capped syringe is acceptable when volume is very small.
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Alternate Containers: Purple (EDTA)
Collection Instructions:Deliver to laboratory immediately.
Causes for Rejection:Specimen collected in lithium heparin or gel tubes.

Interpretive

Reference Range:Crystal Analysis: No clinically significant crystals seen.
Cell Count and Differential: No reference ranges have been established. This result should be interpreted in the context of the patient's clinical condition and compared to simultaneous measurement in the patient's blood.
Use:Aids in the diagnosis of crystal-induced arthritis and evaluation of cell counts on synovial fluid.
